In Service Of The Nervous System
It’s taken me 20 years of practice to realize that yoga is, at its core, in service to the nervous system. Every posture, every breath, every moment of stillness has been teaching me how to regulate, return to balance, and live with resilience.
In the early years, I craved hot, physically demanding classes - maybe I needed intensity and structure before I could touch peace and regulation. These days, my nervous system prefers simple, mindful movement, breath, stillness, and - if I’m being honest - hugs and laughs are a big part of it too.
Recently, I had the gift of attending a Viasomatic Nervous System Reset led by my teacher, Jen Wooten, and fellow yoga therapist, Sam Pullen. The three hours of somatic movement, yoga, breathwork, and meditation was beautifully curated and deeply grounding. We also shared in guided conversation about releasing the pressure to stay calm, cool, and collected in a messy, complicated world. I left the rest feeling lighter than I’d felt in a long, long time.
The takeaway was powerful: nervous system health isn’t about being perpetually peaceful. It’s about riding waves - joy and discomfort, fear and fun, love and fury - and having the tools to respond to each.
I am in awe of this system that carries me through it all and intend to continue to learn more about how yoga directly correlates to nervous system health. Yoga, at it’s best, isn’t about achieving perfection - it’s about befriending our nervous system so we can meet life as it is.
